“Most impressive and outstanding embroidery”

My Metamorphosis explores the physical and emotional changes we experience throughout life’s seasons. The piece illustrates a face transitioning from youth to old age, with flowers and seed pods representing the passing of time and the cycle of the seasons.

Trees symbolise our evolution from one life stage to another, while the heart serves as a metaphor for the ongoing internal transformation we all undergoUsing a variety of techniques—including tonal needle painting, padded stumpwork, and handmade silk blossoms layered over embroidery—the work creates rich texture and depth.

The alternating stitch directions contrast with the smooth silk flowers, reflecting the rough and smooth moments we encounter in life. The peach blossom, chosen for its cultural significance, symbolises love, longevity, and renewal.

Through carefully selected colours inspired by the changing seasons, the piece conveys the aging process and personal growth. My Metamorphosis celebrates life’s journey with a message of hope, joy, and reassurance amidst continual transformation.

Winning the Chairman’s Choice award at the prestigious Hand and Lock Prize for Embroidery was an incredible honour, recognising the piece’s blend of imaginative design and traditional craftsmanship.
