Chasing the Dragon

Gold Award Winner — 2023 Textile Design Competition – Shrewsbury Drapers Company

Theme: East Meets West

This piece explores the complex history and symbolism behind the opium trade through a rich blend of hand embroidery techniques. Chasing the Dragon reflects the duality of the trade — from its dark legacy of addiction to its role in the development of surgical analgesia and its influence on the emergence of Chinoiserie in Western decorative arts.

The work also nods to the historic connection between East and West, highlighting how opium profits funded the import of luxury Chinese goods. A notable reference is the iconic Blue Willow pattern, designed in 1779 by Shropshire designer Thomas Turner, which symbolizes this cultural exchange.

Through intricate stitching and thoughtful composition, the piece captures the yin and yang of this story — a balance of beauty and consequence, tradition and transformation.
